Fly Tying Croston's Tungsten Spider - Simple pattern that catches wary trout
Переглядів 5405 місяців тому
flyfishsd.com/collections/tying-crostons-tungsten-spider I saw this Howard Croston pattern in Fly Fishing & Fly Tying, a magazine from the UK. The pattern in the article was tied with a brown dubbing mix. I have tied this pattern in both brown and olive. It is a quick tie, but very effective. It can be fished independently, but it shines as part of a dry dropper rig. Hook: Fulling Mill Grab Gap...

flyfishsd.com/collections/wd40-fly-tying-video-and-materials The WD40 is one of the easiest flies to tie but also one of the most effective. If you are starting out tying flies, definitely tie some WD40s. They imitate Baetis mayfly nymphs very well, and likely, fish confuse this fly for midge pupae and blackfly larvae. Great video! Just got interested in tying big streamers after fifty plus years of tying! Go figure. When applying the eyes I've used a drill bit to put a little reverse taper in one of my bodkins to use to push the eyes in place. I also take a small piece of wax paper to fold over the top of the fly so I can pinch the eyes in place with out becoming part of the fly!!

    Where can I find this material in bulk, or say, at least a little more than what's purchased from fly shops? I'm all for supporting the mom and pops, but I'm fairly new to all this and trying to watch the budget. Thanks

    Hans, I tied a few of these very similar to the UK versions (snake fly) last month. Tried them in local lake recently and caught some very nice trout. Made mine 2 1/2- 2 3/4” long just doubled the braid on first hook and glued it. None ever pulled it out. I also cut off the first hook, just using the stinger in rear. Used bead chain eyes on the head. Going to tie some with the fish skulls to try. It’s a killer pattern ! Going to try some with magnum zonkers for bass! Really enjoy your videos !!

    uv glue or superglue on the body for extra resilience

    • @hansrcsd
      @hansrcsd 7 місяців тому

      Great Idea. Both would work. Have to apply a thin coat of superglue and let it dry for a second before tying in the wing. Super thin UV resin like the UV Craft Brush On Resin or Bone Dry Plus from Solarez would be good options.

      Hey @coasterbrookie. I still use and love the LAW vise. I stopped using it in my videos to be able to feature vises that are more readily available to my viewers. Thanks! I have tied with hackle fibers before and those work too. Mallard isnt always the most durable but it looks very good. The darker bronze mallard flank feathers are more durable but harder to find and more expensive.

    If you cut your yard in half, tie it down and then fold it back and tie that down it makes for a more sturdy fly. It can not slip out as easily after a long soaking and a couple dozen fish. Just a suggestion.

      The FNF vise was nice. I don't know if I liked it as much as my original LAW vise. I was happy to use it but have continued to tie on my Stonfo Transformer for most of my tying. I also like the Renzetti Traveler as an all around pick. The newer Renzetti Master Vises with the streamer pedestal vises are awesome
